Hey does anyone know about the hobie holder? I was going to pick up a Sunfish the other day, but now I am thinking about one of these. I found one a few hours away looks like it is a little rough. Anything I should look out for? Shouldn’t be too hard to paint over the filler used right? I believe the owner said it comes with original sails but they are in good condition

Forward Hatch Cover on the Omega 14
My boat was restored before I purchased it. In that process I think they made a new hatch cover out of flat stock plastic. It SEEMS to fit nicely, but apparently leaks because when it rains the bin below it fills with water. I might consider making a new hatch cover if I thought I could slow down the leaking.
So here is my question. Does anyone have a picture of the original Omega 14 hatch cover so I can look at the original design for a reference? Jim

too many cleats?
Okay, i've been sailing my boat for a couple years now, and I'm still not sure I do everything right. Actually, I'm pretty sure I do a lot wrong.
One thing that puzzles me: seems like there's one jam cleat too many on the mast. Or maybe I'm missing a line.
Starboard cleat: main halyard
Starboard jam cleat: ?
Port cleat: jib halyard (though I have a furler)
Port jam cleat: I use it for my down haul, but is that right?

Hull number 1784 - need to ID month
Hello - prior owner painted two coats of paint covering up the 12 digit hull ID. But, I do know my hull number is 1784. It is stamped on the metal plate on stern and on original main sail and bag. I have no papers or documents with 12 digit number.
Does anyone have a similar number? I think maybe mine was built in 1987 based on reading of other threads.
I could try to carefully strip paint on stern to reveal the 12 digit number, but that is iffy.
Thanks for your response.
Wayne

A view from inside - Cuddy removed!
I decided at the end of last summer that it was time to utilize the space in the bow area of my Mod 2. I really was not prepared for what I would find.
The Cuddy box was a lot easier to remove than I expected, after removing the screws around the flange, I used a chisel as a pry bar and gently pried, a little bit at a time between the Cuddy flange and deck face and it slowly started to separate. Eventually it popped apart, then it was just a matter of hauling it out of there!
It's actually...

Looking for advice on a used Capri...
I've been searching on and off for a little day sailer for a couple years and am just about to pull the trigger on a '93 Capri 14.2 for around $1,300 but got a little hesitant after seeing this pic:
The crack is a little difficult to see but it comes up from the right of the storage compartment. Is this a cause for concern? Possible rotting wood under the fiberglass? Thanks

Mounting options for a trolling motor/Minn Kota
I just ordered a Minn Kota 40#....as far as mounting options I would prefer no holes. Can I just glue 2 layers of oak ply to the transom on the inner and outside? Any suggestions on batteries? Do these lead batteries die after hitting the water?

Capri 14.2, mast spreaders
I have two sets of spreaders( I don't have the lengths at hand to measure). In principle, which is best ? a longer spreader or a shorter one. Does it matter? Both are OEM by Catalina.
Thanks for comments! Barry

Early Omega 14
I bought a pretty early Omega 14, which had been in storage for some time, the model on the ID plate is O-14 and the serial # 456 and can't figure a few things out:
First, there are no spreaders, and no sign on the mast of there ever having been any. The call out for the C-14 calls for shrouds about 2' longer than mine are, which I figure is for a later version with spreaders. I'm about to replace the shrouds since the plastic covers are badly cracked and have a few whiskers sticking out...

Weighted Centerboard?
Happy New Year to everyone.
I'm a do-it-yourself kind of person and have already installed several improvements to my 14.2.
Has anyone considered, or ever heard of, a weighted centerboard for this boat? I'm new to sailing but wondered to myself if any stability could be gained with some extra weight as far south as possible. Since I mostly sail alone, I have less human weight to throw around for ballast (but seem to be adding to that mass all the time these days!).
Looking forward...

Omega 14 shroud, forestay and halyards
I have become the latest owner of an omega that has sat in the backyard of the previous owner for 17 years without getting in the water. It seems to be in decent shape, missing a few pieces of hardware that can be replaced. The boat was first sold in 1975.
I want to get the wire stays and halyards replaced to be safe. Can anyone tell what size and type wire they should be? They all appear to measure 3/32 inch diameter, but I can't be certain. The shrouds have a white coating. Is that really...

Recommendation for Dock
The deck boards on our dock are 2 x 6 treated pine. It has been stained many times. In years past it was stained with a oil based stain but now the last time we stained it we had to switch over to a quality water based stain. I probably will need 10 gallons. We stain about every 3 years just to protect the boards.
Any recommendations for a stain to use? The color is light grey. Looking for protection not necessarily perfection.

Mast plate decking cracks
Aaagghhhh....I have about had it with this boat. Spent soooooo much time, money and effort getting this boat back together and would have been de-masted if I hadn't noticed the crack beneath the mast plate just before I left the dock.
Any suggestions for repair? It is a mod 2, no cracks in the cubby that I can see?? Have ideas and don't have any problem working with filler, fiberglass and epoxy.
Also have to ask about boat wakes, small waves on the lake. Checked the rigging guidelines...

Comparisons between a Capri 14.2 and a Precision 15
I have recently moved to an area where the homeowners association owns a relatively small lake. There is also a slightly larger lake nearby as well as a large reservoir. I sailed a Laser when I was in college and also crewed on an M16. I am retired now and would like to get a daysailer I could sail single handed or take one, possibly 2 passengers. I very much like the Capri 14.2 and would like to get a mod 3. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a suitable used one to buy. How would a...

New Capri owner, anchoring question
Hello to the forum,
I just purchased a '91 Capri! I can't wait for it to warm up enough to take it sailing here in Central Oregon. I have a question, regarding being able to keep the boat in the water for a few days at a time. The lake that I am most interested in sailing this summer has rocky shores all around, so beaching is not really an option. I was wondering if it is okay to anchor the Capri in the water or will the hull take on water? I feel like I remember hearing that the...

Capri 14.2 Mast Step Installation
Looking for help with installation of a new mast step. I am a new owner of a 1995 model Capri 14.2. The mast step and screws were bent when the mast fell. I have removed the bent screws and plate. Have a new step with factory screws on order. The deck appears sound; the screws and plate took the brunt of the damage.
My question is how to install the new plate. I assume an epoxy filler in the screw holes is required. What type of epoxy to purchase?
What type of waterproof sealant between...

Stepping the mast with roller furling setup
Good day to all!
I plan on installing a roller furl setup on my version 1. Stepping the mast with current forestay setup is pretty easy for one person to do. I made up a jig with 2x4's that held the mast partially up and that helped. Looks like the new arrangement eliminates the current cable and a different one would then be incorporated in the new furling mechanism. Hopefully it's just as easy to step the mast with the jib rolled around it. Anybody have experiance with this?

FAQ: What Should I Do To Prevent Turtling?
We've been getting swamped (no pun intended) on our website Message Board with reports of Capri 14.2s turtling. I was puzzled by this rash of reports, as I’ve been racing these boats for 17 years in the largest fleet in the U.S., and I’ve never actually seen one happen to a Capri 14.2. Lots of capsizes, yes, but no turtling. But after thinking it through, I think I know why. Here in San Diego, the weather is mild...
