Just an introduction...

Just wanted to introduce myself, new to the forum, and new to sailing. I just purchased a Catalina 14.2K (v2) fixed keel. I had asked around my marina, and was told it would be a good boat to learn the basics and have some fun. I have ZERO sailing experience, but have owned several power boats, and currently have a 26 ft Bayliner cabin cruiser docked at our local marina. My wife and I live in northern California on the San Francisco Bay Delta. The boat is a little rough around the edges, but...

Dismasted Capri 14.2 outboard size

I've got an old 1985 Capri 14.2 that my dad dismasted about 15 years ago, and it's been sitting in a lot ever since. This past easter, I went up to where it was and got all the lichens and live oak dust off of it with a power washer. It cleaned up really nice. I am planning to turn her into a Shallow water runabout type thing that I can fish out of. I still need to take the centerboard out and glass in that hole, sand and paint it, fix the cuddy hatch and lots of other things. I'm looking...

mast float for an expo 14.2; righting, turtling.

I have a series of questions. I have never capsized my expo 14.2. How hard is it to singlehanded right the boat.
Has anyone developed a mast float for the fiberglass mast on the Expo, and that does not interfere with furling
the sail. Does the Expo turtle in the same quick fashion as the Alum mast on the standard 14.2.

Trolling Motor Size and Mounting Question

Hi all,

So I'm about ready to bite the bullet and get a trolling motor for my Capri. The boat is pretty easy to row but some days I just want to get out and motor straight into the more fun coastal waters here on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and a motor will help me avoid some of the shoals that give this place the appropriate nickname of the Graveyard of the Atlantic. I also plan to bring out 2-3 other friends for some local fishing trips without sails.

I'm looking at either the...

Hey all,
New to sailing, bought my first boat- a Capri 14.2 (1996). It has a hobie bob on it for anti-turtling and I have been reading forums here and anywhere I can find on tips and such but I still have a few questions.

I've set up a MinnKota 30 for getting in and off the ramp. Since I'm new, I don't trust my ability at all at this point for getting in and out of the water without this assistance. But this leads to two questions. Is the weight of a 27M battery and the motor itself too...

Small outboard motors on Capri 14.2

I'm sure all the forum community have tossed this around before, however, I'm new to this. I would like to ask for the most recent opinions and advice on getting a small motor to have with my boat for times when the wind just leave you floating still. I have read somewhere that the torque from an electric motor can put tremendous strain on the transom and even damage it. Is that true? I have also read through all the various methods for securing a large battery for the motor as well...

Just picked up Hull #3111 (1989) this past week end- It is pretty good shape- can't wait to get out on the water
I'm in my early 50's and haven't sailed since a teenager when I sailed Turnabouts & AMF Pintails- hope its like riding a bike-
Was looking for something that would be trailerable and beach launch able. Looks like this will fit the bill.
Previous owner bought new sails- only been used a couple of times complete with roll fuller jib. I've got the optiparts mast float on the way...

Capri 14.2 Baby Bob fitted

This is a 1985 Capri 14.2 Model #1 with a standard aluminum mast.

I bought a length of 1/8” thick x 2” wide aluminum bar and cut two pieces to fit on the outside of the Baby Bob mounts, and inside the mast.

The fitting is made very rigid by using 4 machine screws and nylon lock nuts that sandwich a ~1” thick x 2” x 2” wood block that i coated with water seal.

Drilling 8 new holes in the Baby Bob mounts was very difficult, but i just went slowly so as not to overheat the drill bit...

Crack in hull taking in water

After a few days floating on a buoy, my Capri 14.2 had taken on significant water, about 5 inches standing in the inner hull. After draining, I rolled it on it’s side and found a crack and a loose flap of fiberglass about 2 inches across and on the center-line of the hull about two feet back from the tip of the bow. I will attach a photo if iCloud ever coughs it up.

I don’t know how it occurred. Has anyone had such damage? If so, how did you repair it?

I purchased an older Capri 14. One of the mounting screws for the pivot bracket is broken. Does anyone know if these screws fasten to individual embedded nuts or is there an embedded plate with two threaded holes?

Hello,

I'm the new owner of a MOD 1 Capri 14.2. I'm new to sailing and new to boat ownership. I'm eager to learn and would like to own a bigger sailboat someday.

The Capri seemed like a good choice to learn how to sail a sloop and to learn with/teach my wife and kids on.

I've been looking around for lakes that are good to sail on around me in the Chicago Suburbs. Lake Michigan is the most obvious one but that's a little intimidating right now. We got the boat in the water the day...

Is there a correct gooseneck height off the mast step?

I bought a 92 Capri 14.2 Mod 2 back in May and have been getting the kinks worked out and sailing it since June. I purchased the boat from someone who knew little about sailing and so the rigging on the boat was a mess. Side stays were stretched to be several inches too long and uneven, no hiking straps, loose tangs for stays and jibstay, blocks with no bearings, clam cleats with broken bearings, ultra fat sheets, etc.

At the time there was only a down stopper for the boom gooseneck and it...

A Draining Question

I am planning on buying a 1989 14.2 this weekend but I have rain water concerns.

I will be keeping the boat in the water at a dock slip at a state park. The boat may go unattended for a couple of weeks at a time and need to know if rain water will self drain if I remove the transom plug. I had an O' Day Daysalior for 5 years before I discovered all I had to do was remove the transom plug to keep rain water from filling the boat while I was away. Of course I had to remember to put the plug...

What is the purpose of this plastic mast hardware?

Sorry if it's been discussed already, not sure how to search for something I don't know how to describe...

Can someone tell me what the purpose of these two plastic parts on the mast are for? My Gen 1 Capri came with the original handbook and owners manual, but neither seems to describe the purpose of these.

And if anyone's wondering about the little Velcro square... I attach a battery powered LED steaming light there when I'm motoring around the lake at night :).

Hi all,

Just purchased my first sailboat, a Capri 14.2! Sail says it's number 1932, though the hull plate(which is very worn (appears to say 1002, so I don't know.) is definitely a mod 1. I'm pretty excited. Been sailing since I was a tot, but always on my dad's boats.

Anyhoo, got it home and at about setting it up, but realized the previous owner didn't include the main sheet. I can order a new one from Catalina pretty cheap, and OEM length is 35'. However, my dad has a spare length of...

Boom vang necessary/helpful?

As previously stated, I recently bought a Mod 1 Capri 14.2. No boom vang on it, sounds like it never had one.

I've always sailed (larger) boats that had a boom vang. Do you all find it necessary? Should I invest in one? ($100+ for the hardware it appears, from Catalina Direct.)

Trying to decide right now as I consider that, a boom kicker or a topping lift as well.

P.S. - Anyone know of good sailing lakes in NE Indiana, or thereabouts?

Tim & Kim pinged me from a post in these forums and said they'd be in the area on vacation with their Capri and would enjoy exchanging tips and tricks.

The weather was fantastic and at times a bit sporty. We launched with 10kts gusting to 14 beating up the bay, made it to a great beaching spot, stopped to debrief what I'd seen with suggestions then pushed back home in 14kts gusting to 17 on primarily reaches ending in a run. They did great and are walking away with plans for more...

What might be the cost to replace lines on a Capri?

Hi! I'm looking at a Catalina Capri 14.2 that my neighbor is selling. It's been sitting outdoors and not used for at least 16 years and the lines look quite worn. I'm wondering how much it might cost to replace the lines. What other things might need replacing?

Whether to pin the rudder and what to use?

Hi All.
I have an older style rudder like this one on catalinadirect.
It uses a big wing nut to hold the rudder up or down, but the rudder still comes up when there is a lot of pressure on it. I try to avoid those situations, but when it happens, it couldn't be at a worse time.
There is a hole through the rudder and rudder head just below the wing nut. It looks like it would be...
