Improvement Pictures #1

In another post, someone was nice enough to ask for pictures of the improvements I have made to my new-to-me 1990 14.2.

Needing to launch from public ramps with limited room, a motor was essential. Here are a couple of shots of the Honda BF-2. I've been out twice now and it's a spectacular motor - moves the boat along very nicely & the bracket keeps it away from the traveler:

With a 100 hp motor, why does this guy even have his sails up?

Great day sailing in light winds today

I launched the boat this morning one last time before the cool weather sets in, since the water temp is in the 60's and falling fast. Light winds, so I felt confident hoisting both sails single-handed, even with my limited experience. I forgot to pack the mainsail battens and boom vang. Rookie mistake.

A few times I could hear the centerboard 'hum' during a sustained gust. Very cool.

Had a great day on the lake. The boat instantly responds to even the smallest changes in wind. No time to...

How do I Install Foam Below Deck?

I have a Mod 3 Capri 14.2 in fair shape. I am not the first owner and even when I got it about 4 years ago the bottom was a bit soft in the rear starboard side. This year it is noticeably worse and the bottom even sits on the trailer crooked as the soft spot deflect upward where it sits on the trailer bunk rails.

I assume the structure inside has deteriorated. Since the plywood supports aren't accessible the only repair I have read about is to fill the space below deck with foam.

The rest...

It was a crazy day we hauled butt with the light winds but we couldnt go upwind and pinch that much with no boom and trying to hold the rear block to center over the tiller. Also down wind i had to use...

Furler angle

i just got a 14.2, its an 88 so mod 1. It has the furler jib setup but I've noticed that the furler sits at such and angle that the line rubs on it when it goes in and out. I'm contemplating putting a fairlead on the deck to run the line through so it spools and unspools properly on the furler.

dimensions of line that holds the centerboard down?

I got out on my new to me 14.2 mod 1 yesterday (finally!) and realized that something must hold the centerboard down as it kept kicking up. I found a shred of line attached to the transom and saw some pics - figured that was what is missing. There was barely any wind so it didn't make too much of difference.

Does anyone know where I can find the dimensions of this line so I can make a new one? I couldn't find it on Catalina Direct. I assume it is a shackle that attaches it to the...

Has anyone used any sails from the sail store or SLO sails or any other $600 or so sail? Whats the best bang for the buck? Just crusing, no racing.

Stern mast crutch

I own a 2005 Catalina 14.2, got a killer deal last summer that I couldn't pass up.

I currently trailor it to the lake and use the styrofoam block that came with it for the rear mast support.

My question is, does anyone have any good DIY pictures to share? Mostly interested in mounting to the rudder brackets.

Thanks!

Mounting Honda 2hp Motor

I recently bought a Honda 4-cycle 2hp outboard for my Capri 14.2. Because of a slightly protruding rubber edge around the boat, the motor could not be securely attached to the transom. Also, it appears that when mounted on the transom the motor could interfere with the operation of the boat. Any suggestions? I am not handy with repairs or modifiations and would probably have to have somebody do whatever needs to be done to make the motor work with the boat. Thanks for suggestions!

Mast step failure. Repair.

Any suggestions for replacing/repairing the entire capri 14 mast step structure? Has has anybody done this?

Bought a Mod 1 from 1984-86 earlier this year. It had been used by a local yacht club and stored outdoors in our notoriously wet conditions (Seattle). When I bought it I noticed some cracks around the mast step. Upon closer investigations it appears the plywood inside the cuddy that supports the wood mast step block had rotted and allowed for some movement. I had read, here, that...

Anyone have this type rig on these small boats?

Wild Bill asked that I post pictures-so here they are. Install was really quit easy and only took a bit over an hour.

I used a 4 1/4 hole saw to cut the opening for the Beckson deck plate - quick and accurate (or round if you like)! I made a rookie mistake and followed the transom line for level (despite reading other posts here and understanding why I shouldn't...) so the ladder is 'cocked' a bit. works fine, looks wonky. I can live with that.

Omega 14 shroud, forestay and halyards

I have become the latest owner of an omega that has sat in the backyard of the previous owner for 17 years without getting in the water. It seems to be in decent shape, missing a few pieces of hardware that can be replaced. The boat was first sold in 1975.

I want to get the wire stays and halyards replaced to be safe. Can anyone tell what size and type wire they should be? They all appear to measure 3/32 inch diameter, but I can't be certain. The shrouds have a white coating. Is that really...

Replacing CB gaskets on Omega 14

I am restoring an Omega (circa 1975) and just received a new set of seals from Catalina Direct. As I have read here on the forum, the new seals are different design and materials from the originals.

My questions is-- if they are installed as supplied, they will overlap each other by about 1/2 inch unlike the original plastic strips which do not overlap at all. Will the overlap still allow the CB to move up and down freely enough? (What was left of the original plastic strips were too stiff...

Thinking of purchasing a Hobie Holder 14

Hey does anyone know about the hobie holder? I was going to pick up a Sunfish the other day, but now I am thinking about one of these. I found one a few hours away looks like it is a little rough. Anything I should look out for? Shouldn’t be too hard to paint over the filler used right? I believe the owner said it comes with original sails but they are in good condition

Hull number 1784 - need to ID month

Hello - prior owner painted two coats of paint covering up the 12 digit hull ID. But, I do know my hull number is 1784. It is stamped on the metal plate on stern and on original main sail and bag. I have no papers or documents with 12 digit number.

Does anyone have a similar number? I think maybe mine was built in 1987 based on reading of other threads.

I could try to carefully strip paint on stern to reveal the 12 digit number, but that is iffy.

Thanks for your response.

Mounting options for a trolling motor/Minn Kota

I just ordered a Minn Kota 40#....as far as mounting options I would prefer no holes. Can I just glue 2 layers of oak ply to the transom on the inner and outside? Any suggestions on batteries? Do these lead batteries die after hitting the water?
